THE CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE.

HomeLAW CLINIC

Clinical Legal Education(CLE)

Clinical Legal Education(CLE) programme centers on the idea of access to justice. This dates back to the end of the fifteenth century, when the then king of England, Henry VII ordered Judges to assign counsels to the poor in need of help.

OBJECTIVES OF CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION:

Globally, universities structure their CLE progammes with a view to provide access to justice to the poor and marginalized. Thus, Campus CLE programmes are focused on the following objectives:

  1. To allow law students to begin the lifelong process of becoming thoughtful, responsible and respective lawyers.
  2. To develop the skills and competencies needed to strengthen the legal system, providing opportunities for learning social concepts.
  3. To enable law students to gain hands-on legal experience whilst, providing pro bono legal services to persons who cannot afford legal representation.
  4. To develop professional attitudes and foster the growth of the practical skills of students with regard to the modern understanding of the role of the socially oriented professional in promoting the rule of law, providing access to justice and peaceful conflict resolutions and solving social problems.
  5. To bridge the gap between theory and practice in the study of the legal profession.
